Our BIGGEST event!  This is a full concert with a sit down dinner held inside the large airplane hangar at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada. Let the music of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Debussy and Villa Lobos take you back to the intense and raw emotions of wartime while sitting alongside some of the actual warplanes from WWII. This will be a powerfully moving experience! Afterwards we will lighten the mood with a  fun dance party and great original music from the 40’s! Dinner will be provided by Sage Catering.

The Program

Debussy, Cello Sonata in d
Cello and Piano
Demoralized by the carnage of World War I and fighting his own battle against cancer, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) writes, “Try as I may, I can’t regard the sadness of my existence with caustic detachment. Sometimes my days are dark, dull, and soundless like those of a hero from Edgar Allan Poe; and my soul is as romantic as a Chopin Ballade.” Cruelly faced with his own mortality, Debussy went to work on a series of instrumental sonatas.  He completed this sonata in 1915.
 I. Prologue (Lent)
II. Sérénade (Modérément animé)
III. Finale (animé) {Léger et nerveux}

Prokofiev, Flute Sonata in D
Flute and Piano

In 1941, during WWII, Prokofiev was evacuated from Moscow to avoid a potential German invasion. The Flute Sonata in D was completed in the summer of 1943 while Prokofiev was enjoying the summer and beauty of the Ural mountain range in western Russia.  Consequently, the piece is considered his most pastoral wartime composition. A large scale work of four movements, the sonata is easy and beautiful to listen to as it provides the listener with various characters, moods and musical depth.
Moderato
Scherzo: Presto
Andante
Allegro con brio

—-Intermission—-

Shostakovich, 2nd Piano Trio
Arr. Flute, Cello, Piano

This composition was born out of Shostakovich's both personal and national heartache.  By 1944, Russia had been at war for several years with a state of exhaustion gripping the country and Shostakovich lost his closet friend, Ivan Sollertinsky (to whom the work is dedicated), who died suddenly of a heart attack at age 41. The piece can be described as Shostakovich at his bleakest, and the music itself captures the energy of wartime where words fall short.  He uses small fragmented sections of folk tunes and obsessive repetition to create a feeling of desperation and anxiety. The work both begins and ends from nothing, creating perceptible power and meaning in it's understated opening and closing.
Andante
Allegro con brio
Largo
Allegretto

Villa Lobos, The Jet Whistle
Flute and Cello

Written in 1950, Assobio a Játo (Jet Whistle) for flute and cello is a perfect example of Villa-Lobos' exotic style. His choice of flute and cello offers maximum contrast between high and low, metal and wood, wind and wire, breath and bow.  The title comes from a name Villa-Lobos gave to a particular novel technique the flautist must employ in the fast glissandi of the third movement sounding to him like a jet plane.  Thought written after the war, we figured this was the perfect effect for the Bomber Museum!

I. Allegro non troppo
II. Adagio
III. Vivo
